Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
The city of Leipzig has a wide variety of museums to offer those interested in culture. Due to its history as a city of music, Leipzig is a treasure trove for music lovers in particular. World-famous composers left their traces behind, which now enrich the local museums. Its role in the Peaceful Revolution makes Leipzig a city with a lively culture of remembrance that deals with historical themes. Its lively art scene also characterises the city and its extraordinary museum landscape.
Where better to recharge your batteries and slow down than in nature? Leipzig and the region have a lot to offer in terms of scenery - and that doesn't mean the urban jungle. From Leipzig's alluvial forest and crystal-clear lakes to the parks and gardens of magnificent palaces, from the Porphyryland Geopark and the species-rich heathland back to the picturesque canals in the vibrant city - here you can spend a variety of active days in the countryside.
Leipzig Zoo delights visitors with its historic buildings and park-like grounds as well as with highlights such as the world's largest great ape enclosure "Pongoland" and the tropical hall "Gondwanaland" - Europe's largest tropical hall at 1.65 hectares. It is home to over 850 animal species, making it one of the most species-rich zoos in Europe.
Take a look behind the scenes of the "Red Bulls" and take part in a stadium tour. Concerts and events are regularly held on the listed festival meadow in front of the stadium. The Leipzig Sports Forum also includes the Arena Leipzig, the DHfK Sports University, the Olympic Training Centre and the collection and archive of the Sports Museum, which is currently not open to the public.
Some of the largest former open-cast mines in the south of Leipzig are now flooded and are affectionately known as Leipzig New Lake District. Lake Markkleeberg or Lake Cospuden are ideal for a bike tour, water sports or a swim.
When visiting Leipzig, a stroll along the Drallewatsch pub mile is a must. The original Saxon word means something like "to experience something" and "to move around the houses". Over 30 restaurants, bars and pubs can be found on the 800 metre long pub mile between Richard-Wagner-Platz and Burgplatz in the area around the famous Barfußgässchen. Whether traditional pubs such as Auerbachs Keller, Barthels Hof, Ratskeller, Zills Tunnel or trendy bars and international cuisine - there is something for every taste. In the summer months, when the narrow streets become the scene of Saxon socialising, it is a wonderful experience. But the abundance of historic buildings is also impressive: houses from the Renaissance, Baroque and Wilhelminian periods stand side by side.
Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, affectionately known as KarLi by the people of Leipzig, is also colourful and lively until the early hours of the morning. It borders the city centre and is known for its many bars, pubs, cafés and international restaurants. Other gourmet miles with many trendy restaurants can be found in Münzgasse around the theatre and along Karl-Heine-Straße in the trendy Plagwitz district.
